Writers, journalists, and media play a vital role in the society because they form, shape and spread its collective knowledge and awareness including awareness about health care issues.
Professionals of any back ground can become medical writers and medical journalists. Health care professionals however, in light of their education, training and experience in dealing with health care issues are more suited to be medical or health care writers and journalists.
In today’s digital communication revolution, anyone can claim anything and spread it world wide instantly. Tons of unscientific, wrong and often harmful medical and health care information spread unchecked partly due to untrained people taking the role of medical writers and medical journalists. We all heard horror stories of patients not following their doctor’s recommendations and not getting the treatments recommended based on false information or fake news. A prime example is the the false and incorrect information that was spread about the COVID 19 pandemic which caused many people to lose their lives unnecessarily.
The American Academy of Medical Writers and it's sister academy, the American Academy of Medical Journalism aim to encourage professionals with background training in any health care related field become medical writers and medical journalists in order to create and spread correct health care related information for the benefit of science and education at large.
